Great confusion about Hydrogen Gas Production — I can’t say why most people seem to think that Electrolysis is the only method of commercial production of Hydrogen.
Personally I am very much of the opinion that EVs must replace the conventional Petrol and Diesel driven vehicles of all types — light vehicles as well as heavy ones.
At the same time it also comes to my mind that transport vehicles are not the only culprits that contribute to Carbon-di-oxide production and emissions; the bigger culprits are conventional thermal power plants using fossil fuels of all kinds and belching Carbon-di-oxide into atmosphere.
Therefore, need of the hour is to do brain storming about finding solution for making it possible to totally do away with use of fossil fuels of all kinds and for all purposes.
To replace conventional thermal power plants there are the following possibilities:
Wind, solar, tidal, wave energy, geothermal and nuclear power generation. Since there is problem of practicability of all these solutions, nuclear power generation presents itself as a viable solution (barring political opposition) although nuclear power generation can’t be totally hazard free and fool-proof.
Somehow, I have not yet come across votaries of use of Hydrogen, one of most abundant substances on earth, for commercial power generation and also for propulsion of vehicles through hydrogen fuel cell driven EVs (rather than Lithium Ion Battery driven ones) although when hydrogen based commercial power generation is adopted EVs with chargeable batteries would at least not be using electricity generated by environment polluting powerplants namely coal and naturalgas fired ones and in this sense the EV Batteries would be harmless although China is the sole large scale producer of Lithium Ion Batteries and some countries may be victimised by China.
Perhaps lack of appreciation of the process of Natural gas reforming is responsible for this. Actually it is an advanced and mature production process that builds upon the existing natural gas pipeline delivery infrastructure. Today, 95% of the hydrogen produced in the United States is made by natural gas reforming in large central plants. This appears to me as being an important technology pathway for near-term hydrogen production.

However, installation of GW capacity Solar Photovoltaic Power stations in desert areas allover in the world can actually feed electricity for generation of really Green Hydrogen.
I hope that people may try to look into this possibility as well, although there are a lot many actively engaged in this process but perhaps they are not in public domain.
